Business Class May Be Closer Than You Think

Most travellers automatically assume that flying business class means paying thousands more than economy. While that can certainly be the case, it isn’t always true. Airfares are constantly changing. Airlines use dynamic pricing based on availability, demand, booking patterns, route competition and many other factors. This means the difference between an economy ticket and a business-class ticket can sometimes be surprisingly small. That’s why it pays to compare BOTH cabins before booking.

Don’t Just Look at the Business-Class Price

Imagine finding an economy flight for $1,100 and seeing business class available for $1,500. At first glance, $1,500 might sound expensive. But the more useful comparison is the $400 difference. For that additional amount, depending on the airline and fare, you could receive benefits such as priority check-in, additional baggage, lounge access, priority boarding, better meals, significantly more space and, on many long-haul flights, a lie-flat seat.

Suddenly, the question changes from:

“Can I afford a $1,500 business-class ticket?”

to:

“Is the business-class experience worth an extra $400?”

That’s a much more useful way to compare fares.

Sometimes the Difference Can Be Remarkably Small

The examples shown in our searches demonstrate just how dramatically the gap can vary. One destination might have a substantial difference between economy and business class, while another could have business class available for only a few hundred dollars more.

And occasionally something even more unusual happens: business class can appear at virtually the same price as economy, or even slightly cheaper.

For example, one recent search showed a fare to Cairo at approximately US$452 in economy and US$448 in business class.

That doesn’t mean business class will always be cheaper, of course. These opportunities depend on the route, travel date, availability and fare conditions, and prices can change quickly. But it demonstrates exactly why travellers shouldn’t automatically assume economy is the best-value option.

Why Can Economy and Business-Class Prices Be So Close?

Airline pricing isn’t simply calculated as “economy costs X and business costs three times X.” Each cabin contains different fare classes and inventory. Airlines continually adjust the availability and price of those fares according to demand.

A heavily booked economy cabin can therefore become expensive while discounted business-class inventory remains available. You might effectively be comparing an expensive economy fare with a discounted business-class fare, which can dramatically narrow the difference.

Compare the Value, Not Just the Fare

This becomes particularly important on long-haul journeys. Paying an additional $100, $300 or $500 for a short flight might not appeal to everyone. But on a 10- or 12-hour journey, the calculation can be completely different.

A relatively modest upgrade could potentially transform hours in an economy seat into a much more comfortable journey with additional space, better service and potentially a bed. The cheapest ticket therefore isn’t necessarily the ticket offering the best value.
